The Story of Black Oats – Lost and Found

This is a captivating story of black oats lost and found. Gerald Miles spent 20 years searching for the black oats his grandfather grew. Through a connection with a folk musician, another older farmer was found to be still growing these almost extinct oats. We formed a group called Llafur Ni and embarked on a journey to eat these oats for the first time. Discovering that eating oats wasn’t as simple as we thought, we had to commission a machine to dehull our rare oats. After a journey lasting several years, a momentous feast was held on Gerald’s farm at which the black oats were prepared by a young Welsh chef and eaten for the first time in living memory. We want to share this story to inspire others, but also to talk more generally about reviving almost extinct seeds and the collective effort that is required to bring a rare seed to plate.
