What’s the Big Deal About Local Food Growing? Thoughts from Wales

With farming policy deferred to the nations, and a Welsh government that has put a renewed emphasis on building a sustainable and vibrant local food production environment, are there lessons to be learned from Wales? This session considers why new enterprises are emerging today, and how horticultural enterprises can champion local, regional and national identity. It will look at the business case for growing local varieties and how this is unfolding in Wales. It will discuss opportunities to increase the diversity of crops grown, and what resources are needed to make traditional and forgotten varieties widely available and affordable. What are local authorities doing to provide a meaningful solution to local food security and growth for food businesses in Wales? Could this be embraced by all four nations of the UK? What can we learn from each other?
