The Benefits of Native Ponies in Welsh Landscapes

The native ponies of Wales are in decline. They live in many landscapes including coasts, moors, marshes and mountains that provide a range of socio-ecosystem services. These services include supporting (e.g. biodiversity), provisioning (grazing), regulating (flood prevention) and cultural services. There is evidence that the pony is critical to maintaining these services as well as influencing landscapes for agricultural benefit. Following a survey of stakeholders, we found that views on the pony’s effect on landscape safety, agricultural quality, soil health and rural communities were divided. These views are captured in a film where we argue for the importance of the pony for agricultural and environmental benefit. After the film there will be a Q&A session where we will invite ORFC participants for their views on this work, and the role of non-stock animals in agricultural systems.
