Health and horticulture policy exist in separate silos. Yet, small scale, peri-urban agroecological market gardens are pioneering ways to connect horticulture and health, leading to dietary, mental and physical health benefits. Bringing together people doing practical work to break down the barriers between production and consumption, by hosting volunteers, distributing “meal packs” and running cooking classes, with those involved in public health campaigning, this session will illustrate the opportunities and challenges of creating a food strategy that both incentivises the growth of more agroecological fruit and vegetables in the UK and encourages everyone to eat more vegetables.
