Policymakers are increasingly recognising the potential of organic farming to help meet emissions reduction targets and to improve biodiversity on farmed land. Organic sector bodies are working with the UK Government and the devolved administrations in Scotland and Wales to develop Organic Action Plans aimed at driving growth in organic farming. Similar plans are being developed by EU member states to help meet the European Commission’s target to increase the amount of land farmed organically to at least 25% by 2030. This panel session, featuring sector representatives from across the UK, will explore the role of Organic Action Plans as strategies for growth. Do we need Organic Action Plans? Have previous plans been effective in driving growth in the sector here in the UK, or further afield in Europe? What resources are required to ensure that an Organic Action Plan delivers on its objectives? Will current plans as drafted help the UK organic sector reach its full potential?
